INTRODUCTION: Vascular diseases and related events are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in adults. In Argentina, cardiovascular events were the leading cause of death between 2006 and 2009. Risk factors are well-known; their detection and modification help reduce vascular events. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of vascular disease risk factors in the adult population of Cipolletti, and to relate them with the National Survey of Risk Factors (ENFR) of 2009. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed. Data were collected with a structured and validated questionnaire, including people aged over 18 and analyzing the main risk factors for vascular disease. RESULTS: According to the main indicators, 58.2% of the population did not meet the minimum level of recommended physical activity, 60.4% had a body mass index >25, 15.9% were active smokers and 14.7% were passively exposed to tobacco smoke. The prevalence of high blood pressure was 41%, high cholesterol 36.6% and diabetes/hyperglycemia 14.7%. Comparing with the ENFR of 2009, there were higher prevalences and statistically significant differences in several parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Initiatives usually take place at national or provincial level, but they should be addressed by local communities, with joint efforts of public sector, private sector and different actors recognized within the community.
