Sexuality and Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Adolescents: Representations and Practices in Villa Carmela, Tucumán

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: It is important to explore social representations (SR) about sexuality and sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) in adolescents from a socio-sanitary approach. OBJECTIVES: To describe and analyze the representations and practices about sexuality and SRR sustained, produced and reproduced by adolescents from Villa Carmela (Tucumán, Argentina). METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted. It included in-depth interviews and focus groups, with a sample of 45 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years. Different SR categories were identified for the analysis. RESULTS: A close connection was observed between representations and practices in the field of sexuality and SRR. Sexual practices are linked to SR about gender, prophylaxis and the particular way in which each subject updates the youth speech. This includes not only the actual practices, but also the potential or fantasized ones. CONCLUSIONS: Guidelines for health policies and programs with a local approach are required. Far from proposing any moralizing position, they should aim at guiding, assisting and supporting young people in different situations and instances through their sexual and reproductive lives.
